Nobody has ever walked into a gym, seen someone with a nasal strip on, and thought "that person has it figured out." They've thought: "did that person just come from a rugby match?" or possibly "is that a Band-Aid situation we shouldn't ask about?" And yet, the relationship between nasal airflow, breathing mechanics, and lower-body performance is real, measurable, and almost completely ignored by the people who spend hours debating whether their hip thrust pad is 0.5 inches too far up their hip.
Let's fix that.
The Actual Problem: You're Probably Breathing Wrong Under Load
Before we get to nasal strips specifically, we need to talk about what actually happens to your breathing during heavy compound glute work โ hip thrusts, Romanian deadlifts, squats, split squats. These are high-demand movements. They require significant intra-abdominal pressure, bracing, and coordinated respiratory mechanics. When you get any of these wrong, the consequences show up as form breakdown, early fatigue, and a rep count that stops embarrassingly short of where it should.

Why Glute Training Specifically Benefits from Good Breathing

In late-set reps โ the ones that actually drive hypertrophic adaptation โ you're trying to manage a brace while your breathing is already elevated. Any airflow restriction compounds the difficulty of this. Nasal Breathing vs. Mouth Breathing Under Load: The Actual Debate
There's a faction of the fitness world โ growing, vocal, and not entirely wrong โ that advocates for nasal breathing during exercise as a default. The argument is that nasal breathing improves nitric oxide delivery, filters and humidifies air more effectively, and encourages more diaphragmatic engagement. Some of this has legitimate support. Some of it is oversold.
The practical reality for most people during high-intensity lifting is that exclusive nasal breathing at maximum effort isn't sustainable. Your ventilatory demand during a heavy set of hip thrusts exceeds what nasal breathing alone can deliver for most people. Mouth breathing or combined breathing becomes necessary.
But the pre-rep breath โ the one that sets your brace โ is where nasal breathing mechanics matter most. Taking that breath through a clear, open nasal passage gives you the controlled, diaphragm-engaged inhale that creates optimal intra-abdominal pressure. A congested or restricted nasal passage forces you to either take a less effective nasal breath or switch to mouth breathing for the brace, which tends to be less controlled and produces a shallower pressure profile.

Try this: before your next heavy set, take your bracing breath exclusively through your nose and consciously direct it into your belly (not your chest). Then brace. Notice whether your brace feels more or less secure than usual. If it feels weaker, you have a breathing mechanics problem worth addressing โ strip or no strip.
Who This Actually Matters For
Not everyone needs to think about this. If you're training at moderate intensity, your breathing is unrestricted, and your bracing is solid, a nasal strip is not going to move the needle in any meaningful way.
This conversation matters most for:
- People training at high relative intensities (85%+ of max effort), where brace quality directly affects whether the set is safe and effective
- Anyone with frequent nasal congestion โ seasonal allergies, low-grade inflammation from poor sleep or high stress โ where baseline airflow is already reduced
- Structural nasal breathing limitations โ anatomical narrowing, deviated septum โ where restriction is persistent rather than situational
- People who've been told their bracing is weak and haven't identified why, despite good coaching on the mechanics themselves

Combine with breathing practice: A strip without better breathing habits is a patch on a process problem. Practice your pre-rep breath deliberately. Inhale into the belly, not the chest. Brace before you move.
Notice what changes: Track whether your late-set reps feel more controlled, whether your lower back fatigues less on hip thrusts, and whether your perceived effort on heavy sets shifts. These are the signals worth paying attention to.

Your glutes don't care how the oxygen gets there. They care that the mechanical environment around every rep is optimal โ that your spine is stable, your brace is solid, and your technique doesn't fall apart in the reps that matter most. Breathing is upstream of all of that.
Nasal strips are not a performance enhancer in any dramatic sense. They're a structural fix for a structural problem that a meaningful percentage of people have and almost no one is addressing. If that problem is yours, ignoring it because nasal strips look weird is arguably the least rational thing you do in a gym full of people wearing backwards baseball caps and filming their sets from three angles.
Fix the airflow. Protect the brace. Train harder reps with better mechanics. The glutes will handle the rest.
