Sleep is where the actual growth happens. Not the pump, not the burn, not the carefully timed post-workout protein shake โ€” the growth. This doesn't mean no late workouts. Some people have no choice, and a late session is always better than no session. But if you're training at 9pm and wondering why you're staring at the ceiling until midnight, that's your answer. If the late slot is unavoidable, prioritize a proper cool-down, avoid high-stimulant pre-workouts after 5pm (obvious, but apparently not), and use the two hours after training to actively downregulate.

What You Eat Before Bed Actually Matters

The "don't eat before bed" rule is gym mythology. There is a meaningful body of evidence suggesting that a moderate amount of protein consumed before sleep โ€” particularly casein protein, which digests slowly โ€” can support overnight muscle protein synthesis without disrupting sleep quality.

The mechanism makes sense: your body is still building overnight, but without incoming amino acids, it eventually has to start pulling from existing muscle to fuel the process. Giving it raw material before you go dark keeps the construction crew working.
