"Keep your spine neutral" is the most repeated cue in any gym, whispered by coaches, screamed by influencers, and tattooed on the nervous system of every lifter who's ever attended a single personal training session. It's also, in the way it's typically applied, a significant oversimplification of how your spine works โ and for glute training specifically, the obsession with perfect lumbar alignment may be costing you more than it's protecting.
Let's have the uncomfortable conversation.
What "Neutral Spine" Actually Means (And Doesn't Mean)
Neutral spine doesn't mean flat. It means the natural S-curve of your spine โ lumbar lordosis, thoracic kyphosis, cervical lordosis โ is maintained rather than exaggerated or eliminated. A perfectly neutral lumbar spine has a slight arch. A posteriorly tilted pelvis flattens it. Anterior tilt exaggerates it. The goal is somewhere in the middle.
Here's where it gets complicated: neutral is a range, not a coordinate. Your lumbar spine doesn't have a single "correct" position locked in place like a rifle scope. It has a zone of positions that distribute load reasonably across the vertebrae, discs, and surrounding musculature. The exact position within that zone that's optimal for you depends on your anatomy, training history, mobility, and the specific movement you're performing.
When coaches say "neutral spine" and mean "perfectly flat lower back, zero deviation, any rounding is injury" โ that's not evidence-based coaching. That's a liability-driven heuristic being passed off as biomechanics.

Spinal flexion and spinal flexion under compressive load are different things. Your spine flexes when you tie your shoes. It's not a fragile structure that crumbles at the first deviation from neutral โ it's a dynamic system that responds to load, position, and context.
Why This Matters for Glute Training
Glute training lives in the hip hinge. Romanian deadlifts, conventional deadlifts, good mornings, cable pull-throughs, single-leg hinges โ these are all movements where the spine has to manage load in a hinged position, and where even skilled lifters will show some degree of lumbar flexion as fatigue accumulates or load increases.
The obsession with eliminating all lumbar flexion from these movements has a few downstream effects that nobody talks about:
1. It limits your hip hinge depth. If you're rigidly locked into maximum lordosis, your hamstrings and posterior chain hit end-range faster. You run out of runway before the glutes get fully loaded. Some controlled posterior tilt at depth โ what many coaches pejoratively call "butt wink" โ actually allows greater hip hinge range, and research on hip mechanics suggests greater range can mean greater glute loading across the rep.
2. It creates an artificial fear response. Lifters who've been told any rounding equals injury become hyper-vigilant about their lower back, which ironically increases perceived exertion and generates muscle guarding that can create actual problems. Fear of movement is itself a risk factor for pain.
3. It ignores the role of spinal extensors. When you train in slight flexion under control, your spinal erectors work eccentrically to resist further flexion. That's a training stimulus. A spine that only ever operates in its comfort zone doesn't develop resilience in the ranges where you're most likely to get hurt in real life โ which, for the record, is during everyday tasks like picking up groceries, not during controlled gym reps.

The spinal flexion debate has been loud in biomechanics circles for over a decade. The historical framing โ associated with researchers like Stuart McGill โ positioned spinal flexion under load as a primary driver of disc herniation and lumbar injury. That work has been enormously influential, and not without merit.
But the picture is more nuanced now. Other researchers and clinicians have pointed out that:
- Discs respond to load and adapt over time, much like other connective tissues
- The dose makes the poison โ occasional controlled flexion under moderate load is categorically different from repeated high-load flexion at end range in a fatigued state
- Sedentary lifestyles that involve no spinal loading or range are associated with disc degeneration, not protection
- The evidence on what actually causes disc herniation in otherwise healthy lifters is genuinely mixed
The honest answer is that context matters enormously. Someone returning from a lumbar disc injury? Different conversation. A generally healthy person who rounds slightly at the bottom of a Romanian deadlift with 60% of their max? That's not an emergency.

So What Should You Actually Do?
The goal isn't to round your spine intentionally or to treat lumbar flexion as a programming tool. The goal is to stop treating mild, controlled deviation from perfect neutral as a catastrophic event that requires stopping the set, spiraling into anxiety, and researching spinal surgeons.
Here's a working framework:
During Hip Hinges (RDLs, Deadlifts, Good Mornings)
Aim for neutral through the upper back and lumbar spine. Allow the natural posterior pelvic tilt that occurs as you reach full hip flexion โ your pelvis and spine are connected. If your lumbar spine shows a small amount of flexion at the bottom of an RDL with good hamstring range, that is probably not the thing that's going to break you.
What you're actually trying to avoid: gross lumbar flexion โ the kind where your lower back is fully rounded, your pelvis is tucked hard under, and you're lifting the weight by violently extending through a compromised position. That's a different animal.
During Hip Thrusts and Bridges
Here, the cue "neutral spine" means don't hyperextend at the top. The mistake most people make is opposite โ they arch their lower back aggressively at the top of the thrust, which actually reduces glute activation and dumps load into the lumbar extensors. A slight posterior pelvic tilt at the top of a hip thrust puts you into better glute peak contraction. Neutral, or even slightly flexed, is your friend here.
During Squats
Lumbar flexion in a squat (especially under load) is where the risk profile starts to climb meaningfully. Keeping a solid braced neutral through the lumbar during loaded squats is worth prioritizing. But even here, what constitutes "too much" deviation is individual, load-dependent, and not automatically catastrophic.

The Practical Takeaway
Learn what your neutral spine actually feels like. Not the Instagram version where you've got an aggressive lordotic arch and your lower back looks like a suspension bridge. Not the "posteriorly tilted, glutes squeezed, totally flat" version either. The real, natural, anatomically appropriate version.
Then learn to maintain it under load โ not rigidly, but as a home base. Notice when you're deviating significantly and ask yourself why: is it fatigue, mobility limitation, load too high, or hip anatomy that requires some adjustment? Treat significant deviation as information, not as evidence that you've permanently damaged yourself.
The lifters who build the best posterior chains over the long term aren't the ones who've perfectly followed every neutral-spine cue into paralysis. They're the ones who understand how their body moves, manage load intelligently, and progressively build resilience in a range of positions โ including a few that wouldn't pass the Instagram form check.
A back that only trains in its comfort zone stays weak at the edges. And the edges are where real life happens.
