If someone told you that squeezing a rubber ring in your hands could improve your glute output, you'd probably back away slowly and look for the exit. And yet here we are. 1. Pre-set priming. Squeezing a grip ring repeatedly in your warm-up set isn't just about waking up your hands โ€” it trains the pattern of deliberate, full-force grip engagement. This makes it easier to replicate that same intentional tension when your hands are on a barbell or trap bar during your working sets.

2. Mind-muscle contrast. If you've ever struggled to feel your glutes engage at the top of a hip thrust, try this: during your next set, squeeze the bar or the pad's edge as hard as physically possible at lockout. Many people report noticeably higher glute activation โ€” not because of magic, but because the high-effort grip cranks up total neural drive and the glutes are in a position to benefit from it.

3. Deload-week accessory work. During a deload, you're pulling back on heavy loading. Grip training is one of the few accessory tools that doesn't accumulate the same kind of mechanical fatigue as compound lifts. You can build your baseline grip capacity during lighter weeks, which means better irradiation potential when the heavy sets return.

Conventional and Sumo Deadlifts

Hip Thrusts

Less intuitive, but the cue is real. At the top of the thrust, where glute engagement is maximized, try gripping the bar or the bench edge hard. Many coaches use this exact cue to help clients who struggle to feel the glute contraction at lockout.

Building Your Grip Without Becoming Weird About It

You don't need to carry a grip ring everywhere you go and squeeze it aggressively during meetings (though no one can stop you). A few practical strategies:

  • Add grip work 2-3x per week during warm-ups or cool-downs. This is not its own training block. Five minutes is plenty.
  • Use dead hangs. Hanging from a pull-up bar for time is brutally effective for grip endurance and costs you nothing but a pull-up bar and your ego.
  • Don't neglect bar friction. Gym gloves reduce the sensory feedback between your hands and the bar. That feedback is part of what drives irradiation. If you're using gloves primarily to avoid calluses, chalk is a cleaner solution.
  • Cue it, don't just do it. The irradiation benefit comes from intentional maximum-effort grip, not casual holding. There's a difference between holding a bar and actively trying to crush it.

Pro tip

If you've been using lifting straps on every set of every pull โ€” not just your heaviest working sets โ€” your grip is probably weaker than it should be, and you're leaving irradiation gains behind. Save the straps for true max-effort loads. Let your grip work the rest of the time.

The glutes respond to neural drive. Your grip is one of the cleanest ways to turn it up. Ignore it if you want โ€” but you'd be leaving gains on a table you couldn't properly grip anyway.
