Nobody talks about occlusion belts for the lower body, which is strange, because the lower body is where most people actually want results. The entire BFR conversation somehow got hijacked by guys who want bigger biceps without lifting heavy, and the glute-training community โ the people arguably most motivated to optimize every variable โ mostly ignored it. Blood flow restriction training is not a gimmick. It is also not magic. It is a specific physiological tool that, when used correctly, produces real hypertrophic stimulus at loads that would otherwise be laughably light. For glute training specifically, that matters more than people realize.
What Occlusion Training Actually Does
The mechanism isn't complicated, but it is interesting. When you apply a cuff or wrap to restrict venous return โ blood leaving the muscle โ while allowing arterial blood to continue flowing in, you create a metabolic environment inside the muscle that mimics what happens at much higher intensities.

Lower body BFR is more nuanced because the femoral artery is deeper and the tissue around the upper thigh is considerably thicker. You need either a proper BFR cuff with a pressure gauge or a dedicated wrap designed for lower limb occlusion.
The wrap goes on the upper thigh, as high as possible toward the hip crease. Not mid-thigh. Not around the knee. As high as the thigh allows. Bilateral and unilateral variations both work. RDLs are harder to control with BFR cuffs on because the range of motion and bracing demands complicate things โ save those for regular loading.
